North Dakota's Bakken region maintained its active drilling rig count at 23 on Monday, May 4, 2026, following a day where one rig was added and one was removed.

According to Bakken Wire's live rig data, WGO Resources, LLC activated the STONEHAM 16 rig at location 140-104-34 in Golden Valley County. Meanwhile, XTO Energy Inc. removed the H & P 640 rig from location 154-96-3 in Williams County. No rigs were reported to have moved location during the period.

This stability extends the pattern observed over recent weeks. The Bakken rig count was also 23 one week ago on April 27, 2026, and one month ago on April 4, 2026, indicating a prolonged period of unchanged activity in the state's primary oil-producing region.

The local steadiness contrasts with a slight decline in the broader North American drilling landscape. According to a report from Rigzone citing Baker Hughes data published May 1, the total North America rig count lost four rigs week-on-week, falling to 670. This was driven by a seven-rig drop in Canada, despite a three-rig gain in the United States.

The U.S. total rig count stands at 547, comprising 408 oil rigs, 130 gas rigs, and nine miscellaneous rigs. Week-on-week, the U.S. land rig count actually dropped by six, but gains in offshore and inland water categories pushed the national total higher. Among major basins, the Permian dropped one rig, while the Haynesville and Eagle Ford each added rigs.

Baker Hughes data also showed significant state-level variances: Texas added four rigs, Louisiana added two, and Alaska added one, while New Mexico dropped three and Wyoming dropped one week-on-week.

Year-over-year, the North America rig count is down 34 rigs. The U.S. has cut 37 rigs compared to May 2025, driven by a reduction of 64 oil rigs, though gas and miscellaneous rigs have increased. Canada has added three rigs year-on-year.

The consistent Bakken count, amidst fluctuating national totals, suggests operators in the Williston Basin are maintaining a focused level of drilling investment. The day's activity shows continued operations by both large independents like XTO Energy and other players such as WGO Resources, with work shifting between counties within the basin.

North Dakota Rig Count Holds at 23 for Third Consecutive Report

The number of active drilling rigs in North Dakota remained unchanged at 23 on Wednesday, May 6, according to the latest live data from Bakken Wire. There were no new rigs added, no rigs removed, and no rigs that moved location since the previous report. This marks the third consecutive reporting period with no movement in the state's drilling fleet. The rig count has now held steady at 23 for over a week, matching the total from Wednesday, April 29. Furthermore, the count is identical to the level reported one month ago, on April 6. The prolonged stability at 23 active rigs indicates a period of consistent, measured drilling activity across the Bakken formation and Williston Basin. This plateau follows the significant downturn and subsequent recovery in activity seen in prior years. Operators appear to be maintaining a focused capital discipline, directing rigs to their most productive core acreage. A...

North Dakota Rig Count Holds at 23

North Dakota's active drilling rig count held steady at 23 on Tuesday, according to live data from Bakken Wire. The figure showed no day-over-day movement, with no new rigs added, none removed, and no rigs changing location since Monday. The current count represents a stable plateau for drilling activity in the Bakken formation and wider Williston Basin. Compared to recent historical data, the rig fleet is up by one from the 22 rigs reported one week ago, on April 28, 2026. It is unchanged from the 23-rig level observed exactly one month prior, on April 5, 2026. This consistency suggests operators are maintaining a measured pace of development. The rig count is a key leading indicator for future oil production in the state, which is the third-largest oil-producing region in the United States. A stable count in the low-20s reflects a focus on capital discipline and efficiency, with companies prioritizing...

Bakken Rig Count Holds at 23 Amid North American Decline

The number of active drilling rigs in North Dakota held steady at 23 on Tuesday, according to live data from Bakken Wire. The count showed no new additions, removals, or location moves since the previous day. This stability comes after a slight increase one week ago. The current count is up one rig from the 22 active on April 28, 2026, and is identical to the level seen one month ago on April 5, 2026. The local steadiness contrasts with a broader decline across North America. According to Baker Hughes' latest weekly count published May 1, the total North American rig count fell by four week-on-week to 670, according to a report from Rigzone. This decline was driven by a seven-rig drop in Canada, which offset a three-rig gain in the United States. The U.S. rig count stood at 547, comprising 408 oil rigs, 130 gas rigs, and nine miscellaneous...
