Devon Energy Secures Lone New Bakken Permit, Five Renewals Filed

The DMR approved one new drilling permit for Devon Energy in McKenzie County, while operators filed for five permit renewals, mostly for locations outside standard spacing units.

The North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources approved one new drilling permit in its latest daily activity report. Devon Energy Williston, L.L.C. received the sole permit, #43130, for the BLUEFIN 13F 2H well in McKenzie County's Siverston field.

Meanwhile, operators filed for five permit renewals, with Devon Energy and Lime Rock Resources accounting for all the activity. According to the report, four of the five renewal applications are for proposed locations outside of their designated spacing units, a technical step sometimes required for precise well targeting.

Lime Rock Resources III-A, L.P. filed for two renewals in Dunn County. Permit #36738 is for the REUBEN SCHNEIDER 2-27-34H-143-96 well and permit #36739 is for the REUBEN SCHNEIDER 3-27-34H-143-96 well. Both are in the Fayette field and are listed as proposed drillbacks outside of the spacing unit.

Devon Energy Williston, L.L.C. was active with three renewal filings, all in Dunn County's Twin Buttes field. The permits—#42118 for FREDERICKS EAST 1-2-3HA, #42119 for FREDERICKS EAST 1-2-3HX, and #42120 for FREDERICKS EAST 1-2-3HB—are all for locations described as being outside of the spacing unit.

The report also listed three wells with confidential status changes. Devon Energy had two in Williams County's Todd field: the WAGENMAN 29-32 2H (#22056) and the WAGENMAN 29-32 1H (#22057). Petro-Hunt, L.L.C. had one in Mountrail County's Powers Lake field: the HOIBY 158-94-4C-3-4H (#42446). Confidential status changes typically relate to the start of drilling or completion work.

The day's regulatory activity highlights continued administrative work by operators in the core Bakken region, with filings concentrated in Dunn, McKenzie, Williams, and Mountrail counties. The single new permit points to a measured pace of new drilling approvals.
