DMR Approves Seven New Permits, All in Dunn County

The North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources approved seven new drilling permits in its latest daily activity report, all located in Dunn County. Burlington Resources Oil & Gas Company LP was the most active operator, receiving approval for five permits, while XTO Energy Inc. secured two.

Burlington Resources' permits are for the Fox Tail pad, with wells 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E, and 1F all located in Section 10-145N-96W. XTO Energy's new permits are for the Carus Federal pad, with wells 32X-25E and 32X-25B in Section 25-148N-97W. All seven new permits are for locations designated as 'CONFIDENTIAL' fields, according to the DMR report.

The report also listed two permit renewals. XTO Energy renewed a permit for the Abby Federal 24X-7A well in Dunn County's Haystack Butte field. Kraken Operating, LLC renewed a permit for the Augustus 2-11-14 #1H well in McKenzie County's Little Tank field. Both renewals were noted as "PROPOSED DRILLBACK OUTSIDE OF SPACING UNIT," according to the filings.

In additional activity, four existing permits had confidential status changes filed. Koda Resources Operating, LLC filed for two wells, the Stout 1633-3BH and Stout 1633-4BH, both in Divide County. Oasis Petroleum North America LLC also filed for two wells, the Storhaug 5700 42-23 2B and Storhaug 5700 42-23 3B, in Williams County.

The concentration of new permit activity in Dunn County highlights continued operator interest in the central Bakken region. The use of 'CONFIDENTIAL' status for new wells is a common practice, allowing operators to withhold specific production data for a limited time. The permit renewals for drillbacks outside existing spacing units indicate ongoing efforts to optimize recovery from established units.
