
European Heatwaves Strain Grids, Highlight Global Cooling Challenge
Record temperatures drive air conditioning demand and force nuclear power curtailments, underscoring energy system vulnerabilities.
Europe is grappling with a severe heatwave that is simultaneously driving electricity demand to new peaks and crippling key power generation sources, according to reports from OilPrice.com. The dual pressures highlight a growing global challenge for energy systems as temperatures rise.
France is reducing production at as many as five nuclear power plants, with two already curbing output this week, OilPrice.com reported. The nation's rivers, used for cooling reactors, have grown too hot to operate effectively. This comes as France faces temperatures forecast to reach 42°C (107.6°F). The nuclear reductions threaten energy availability and affordability in France and in neighboring countries like Germany and the United Kingdom that rely on its exports.
At the same time, the heat is driving soaring demand for air conditioning. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) forecasts the global installed capacity of cooling equipment will triple by 2050, more than doubling electricity consumption, according to an OilPrice.com report. This trend complicates efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
In Britain, the National Energy System Operator (Neso) issued a rare warning of tight electricity margins, citing a potential shortfall of 1.2 gigawatts during peak evening demand. The operator blamed "extreme temperatures across Europe, reducing the availability of some generation." Low wind speeds have left UK wind farms producing only 6.6% of the nation's electricity mix, forcing greater reliance on gas-fired plants and imported power.
The situation marks a reversal for energy grids, where peak strain has traditionally been a winter phenomenon driven by heating demand. "As it gets hotter, things stop working quite so well," Iain Staffell, an associate professor at Imperial College London, told DW, as quoted by OilPrice.com.
In response, European governments and researchers are exploring alternatives to energy-intensive air conditioning. The UNEP's Cool Coalition is promoting passive cooling measures in construction, such as insulation, shading, and reflective materials. In Paris, the number of designated "cooling islands" featuring water and vegetation has increased from 800 in 2019 to over 1,400 in 2026, OilPrice.com reported.
