Global Energy Shifts Impact Bakken Outlook as JERA Profits, Hormuz Tensions Persist

JERA Co Inc, a major Japanese integrated power and gas utility, reported a 5.2 percent year-on-year increase in profit to JPY 193.5 billion ($1.23 billion) for its 2025 financial year, according to Rigzone. The company cited lower fuel costs and increased profits in overseas power generation and renewable energy as key drivers, despite a decrease in its domestic fuel business profit. JERA ended the financial year with JPY 1.12 trillion in cash and cash equivalents.

The company warned that the outlook for resource prices and fuel procurement remains uncertain due to the situation in the Middle East and other factors. JERA stated it has not yet determined an earnings forecast for FY2026, as reported by Rigzone.

In the Middle East, President Donald Trump said the U.S. will begin guiding some neutral ships trapped in the Persian Gulf out through the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday, May 4, according to a separate Rigzone report. The effort, dubbed "Project Freedom," involves U.S. Central Command providing military support to restore commercial shipping but does not currently involve U.S. Navy escorts.

Admiral Brad Cooper, head of Central Command, said the support is "essential to regional security and the global economy." The announcement followed a reported incident where a tanker was hit by projectiles 78 nautical miles north of Fujairah, United Arab Emirates. Oil prices steadied with Brent crude near $108 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate below $102 as traders assessed the situation, Rigzone reported.

Separately, the European Commission launched a new EUR 600 million ($703.59 million) funding call for cross-border energy infrastructure projects, Rigzone reported. The funding is linked to the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility for Energy and will be open until September 30, 2026. The call supports projects already on a list of Projects of Common Interest and Projects of Mutual Interest adopted in April 2026.

Energy and Housing Commissioner Dan Jørgensen said strengthening the energy system is "urgently needed" to bring down costs and integrate more renewables. The latest project list includes 113 power and offshore grid projects, 100 hydrogen projects, and 17 carbon transport infrastructure projects, shifting focus away from fossil fuels.

For Bakken operators, JERA's financial performance and caution on fuel price uncertainty highlight the interconnected nature of global energy markets. Tensions and shipping guidance in the Strait of Hormuz—a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments—directly impact the price benchmarks against which Bakken crude is often priced. Meanwhile, substantial EU investment in alternative energy infrastructure underscores long-term market shifts that could affect future demand for fossil fuels.

ExxonMobil Seeks New Investment Amid Kazakhstan Field Decline Warning

ExxonMobil has warned of a looming production decline at Kazakhstan's top oilfield, according to a report from Rigzone. The Spring, Texas-based supermajor is now seeking to invest billions of dollars in a new project at the nation's Kashagan development to help cushion a slide at its Tengiz deposit. The development highlights the ongoing global challenge for major operators in managing decline rates at large, legacy assets. For ExxonMobil, which holds a significant position in the Bakken formation through its subsidiary XTO Energy, capital allocation decisions for international mega-projects can compete with spending plans for domestic shale basins. While the Rigzone report did not specify impacts on ExxonMobil's North American operations, major capital commitments abroad can influence the pace of development in other regions. Bakken operators often watch the investment patterns of supermajors as indicators of broader industry sentiment and strategic focus. The Bakken formation remains a core, cash-generating asset for...

Global Energy Developments May Impact Bakken Market Sentiment

A U.S. federal court upheld a Trump administration order to restart the SYU project, a decision the Justice Department called "a significant victory for President Trump's efforts to unleash American energy," according to Rigzone. While the specific project's location is not detailed in the report, such rulings can reinforce a regulatory environment favorable to domestic oil and gas development, which Bakken operators monitor for precedent. In international affairs, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian urged an end to ongoing conflict, stating, "It would be better to end the war today, when we have power and dignity, and with the whole world acknowledging our victory," Rigzone reported, citing the Iranian Students' News Agency. Geopolitical tensions in oil-producing regions routinely influence global crude prices, which directly affect the economics of drilling and production in the Williston Basin. Meanwhile, in Norway, a union and a helicopter industry group began talks to avert a strike. The...

Court Upholds Trump Order on SYU; Global Energy News Roundup

A federal court has upheld a Trump administration order to restart the SYU project, a decision the Justice Department called "a significant victory for President Trump's efforts to unleash American energy," according to Rigzone. While the specific details of the SYU project were not disclosed in the report, such legal victories for federal energy policy can influence the regulatory environment for domestic oil and gas production, including operations in the Bakken. In international news, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian urged an end to ongoing conflict, stating, "It would be better to end the war today, when we have power and dignity, and with the whole world acknowledging our victory," Rigzone reported, citing the Iranian Students' News Agency. Geopolitical tensions in key oil-producing regions like the Middle East are a perennial driver of global crude price volatility, which directly impacts the price Bakken operators receive for their production. Meanwhile, in Norway, a...
