The global surge in artificial intelligence is forcing a major evolution in power generation, with a new hybrid model pairing natural gas with nuclear energy to meet data center demand. According to a report from OilPrice.com, U.S. energy firms are pursuing this approach to provide reliable, large-scale electricity. A key project in Texas involves Blue Energy and GE Vernova planning a 2.5-gigawatt facility using a small modular nuclear reactor alongside natural gas turbines. The partners plan to start building the natural gas components later this year, with gas-powered generation anticipated by 2030 and nuclear power coming online by 2032. This model highlights the continued foundational role of dispatchable natural gas in supporting new, massive electricity demand.
Meanwhile, a looming export crisis for OPEC's second-largest producer could ripple through global oil markets. OilPrice.com reports that Iraq faces an economic disaster as its key agreement to export crude through pipelines to Turkey expires on July 27, 2026. This route became vital after the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz on February 28, which had previously handled 95% of Iraq's exports. With limited options, Iraq's production has plummeted, averaging just 1.389 million barrels per day in April, down from over 4.1 million bpd earlier in the year. The prolonged shutdown risks causing permanent damage to Iraq's oil reservoirs. Any major, sustained disruption from a large producer like Iraq typically increases volatility and supports global benchmark prices, which can benefit producers in stable regions like the Bakken.
In the energy transition sector, battery storage is poised for massive growth. OilPrice.com reports that CATL, the world's largest battery maker, expects energy storage systems to account for half of its total sales in the coming years, up from 25% currently. This growth is driven by regulations, particularly in Europe, mandating storage to pair with intermittent wind and solar power and reduce waste, or curtailment. Germany, for example, curtailed 9.6 terawatt-hours of renewable generation last year. Major commodity traders like Vitol and Trafigura are investing in European battery storage projects to capitalize on electricity market opportunities.
