Global Straits Tensions, Gulf Deals, and ND Tech Highlight Energy Landscape

Strait of Hormuz closure disrupts trade, Shell expands Gulf ties, and ND's fracking tech eyed for geothermal.

Global oil markets faced renewed uncertainty Wednesday as a U.S.-led effort to escort tankers through the Strait of Hormuz was abruptly paused. According to OilPrice.com, President Donald Trump called off the 'Project Freedom' initiative just three days after announcing it, leaving cargo vessels and tanker owners scrambling. The Strait, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, was mostly clear of traffic following the pause.

The short-lived project had allowed some ships to pass, including the Alliance Fairfax, operated by a Maersk subsidiary, which had been stranded since the war began on February 28. In a social media post, President Trump stated the pause was to see if an agreement to end the war with Iran could be finalized. Reports of a potential framework deal caused oil prices to plunge 12% early Wednesday before paring losses.

Meanwhile, in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, Shell and INEOS are planning more joint tiebacks, Rigzone reported. INEOS is acquiring a 21 percent working interest in the ventures, consistent with its ownership in other Gulf assets like Appomattox, Rydberg, the Nashville discovery, and the Mattox pipeline. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Closer to home, North Dakota's oilfield technology is being studied as a potential key to developing geothermal energy in the state. Researchers from the Energy and Environmental Research Center (EERC) presented a report last week, noting that fracking technology could create the necessary permeability in tight rock formations for geothermal systems. Tyler Hamman, assistant vice president for strategic partnerships with the EERC, presented the findings to the North Dakota Industrial Commission.

Hamman stated that while underground temperatures in western North Dakota may be sufficient, the tightness of the rock is a challenge. "The solution may lie with the technologies, workforce and expertise used in North Dakota by the oil and gas industry," he said, according to the report sourced from Bing News. He compared the current state of enhanced geothermal technology to the early days of the shale revolution.

The EERC cautioned that significant unknowns remain, particularly regarding cost-effectiveness in North Dakota's unique geology. Currently, about 90% of U.S. commercial geothermal production is in California and Nevada. Attorney General Drew Wrigley, a member of the Industrial Commission, noted he was surprised by how much heat transfer technology is already in use, such as at compressor stations along the Northern Border natural gas pipeline.

WTI is up 0.26% to $87.06, while Brent rose 0.65% to $94.39. The price strength is being attributed by financial press to ongoing tensions from the U.S. war with Iran, which are seen as constraining global supplies, and to strengthening Asian demand (Rigzone).
