The North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources approved six new drilling permits on Friday, May 8, 2026, according to its daily activity report. Hess Bakken Investments II, LLC was the most active applicant, securing four new permits in Mountrail County.

All four Hess permits are for wells in the Ross field: RS-JONES-156-92-3532H 2 through 5. The other two new permits were for EOG Resources, Inc. for the Burke 419 3416H well in Mountrail County's Parshall field, and for Phoenix Operating, LLC for the Spackler 1 SWD injection well in Divide County.

The report also listed 19 permit renewals, signaling ongoing project development across the basin. Kraken Operating, LLC renewed two permits for Bear Butte wells in McKenzie County. Formentera Operations, LLC had a single renewal for a well in Divide County's Colgan field, which is listed as 'Confidential'.

Five permit cancellations were recorded, all for Oasis Petroleum North America LLC Bud unit wells in Williams County. The cancellations are for wells BUD 14X-20EXH, BUD 14X-20A, and BUD 5895 41-20 2B through 5BX.

One producing well was reported as completed. XTO Energy Inc. completed the HBU Sakakawea Federal 13X-35EXH well in McKenzie County, with no initial production test available at the time of filing.

Nine well name changes were filed, primarily involving two operators. Phoenix Operating LLC renamed six "M Johnson" unit wells in Williams County to the "Adrian" unit. Formentera Operations, LLC renamed three wells, two in Burke County and one in Divide County.

One confidential status change was noted for Devon Energy Williston, L.L.C.'s Finn 13-25F 2H well in Williams County's Briar Creek area.

The day's filings indicate continued operational focus in the core Bakken counties of Mountrail, McKenzie, and Williams. The cluster of new Hess permits in Mountrail's Ross field points to ongoing development in that central region of the play.
