Hunt Oil, Burlington Lead Permitting as DMR Approves Five New Bakken Wells
Divide and Dunn counties see new horizontal drilling activity; Silver Hill and Oasis update confidential status on existing permits.
The North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources approved five new drilling permits in its daily activity report for Wednesday, July 29, 2026, with Hunt Oil Company and Burlington Resources Oil & Gas Company LP accounting for all new authorizations.
Hunt Oil Company received three permits for wells in the Alexandria field of Divide County, according to the report. The permits, #43165, #43169, and #43170, are all for locations in SE SE 34-161N-100W. Burlington Resources Oil & Gas Company LP was approved for two permits, #43167 and #43168, for wells in the ‘CONFIDENTIAL’ field in Dunn County. Both Burlington wells are located in NE NW 11-145N-96W.
The DMR also processed two permit renewals. Formentera Operations, LLC renewed its permit (#90380) for the RNL 1 SWD injection well in Burke County's Lignite field. Falcon Midstream Services, LLC renewed its permit (#90414) for the DECKER SWD 5493 11-19 disposal well in Mountrail County's Robinson Lake field.
Additional activity noted in the report included confidential status changes for three previously filed permits. Silver Hill Energy Operating, LLC updated the status for two permits, #41294 (DOUBLE-R SARAH 158-94-34-33-2MBH) and #41296 (DOUBLE-R LEAH 158-94-34-33-4MBH), both located in NW SW 35-158N-94W in Mountrail County. Oasis Petroleum North America LLC also updated the status of permit #42495 for the HOFF 5700 43-24 4B well in SW SE 24-157N-100W in Williams County.
The new permits highlight continued operator interest in the northwestern reaches of the Bakken formation. Hunt Oil's three-well cluster in Divide County targets the Alexandria field, while Burlington's two-well project in Dunn County is filed under confidential status, a common practice for initial wells in a new development area.
