DAILY ENERGY BRIEFING Thursday, October 15, 2026

1. Headlines

Oil prices are mixed today, with WTI crude showing significant strength. As of midday, WTI is trading at $96.3, up $2.4 (+2.56%). In contrast, Brent crude is essentially flat at $105.98, down a marginal $0.08. The primary catalyst for WTI’s rise is a substantial drawdown in U.S. crude inventories reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). The EIA data shows commercial stockpiles fell by 8.6 million barrels last week, bringing total inventories to 415.6 million barrels (OilPrice.com). This follows an even larger reported draw of 11.12 million barrels from the API a day earlier.

Global Fuel Risks, Ukraine Strikes Shape Bakken Market Outlook

Bakken operators and royalty owners are navigating a global energy market where supply disruptions, shipping costs and sanctions policy are shaping crude and fuel prices, according to Rigzone and OilPrice.com. Rigzone reported on Oct. 14 that oil gained amid renewed supply disruptions, rising shipping costs and continued pressure on global fuel markets. By early Thursday, OilPrice.com said crude oil prices fell about 1% in Asian trading as reports emerged that U.S. President Trump was considering lifting sanctions on tankers used to transport oil and fuels from Venezuela, Russia and Iran in a bid to ease a deepening tanker crunch. The price moves came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine would resume drone strikes on Russian refineries after Russia continued attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure despite Trump’s claim of an “energy ceasefire,” according to OilPrice.com. Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs confirmed the plans but stopped short of confirming a binding agreement, noting terms remain subject to negotiation.
