India Shifts From Russian Oil as Global Markets Test Bakken

The Bakken formation is North Dakota's primary oil-producing region, and its producers sell into a global crude market that is being reshaped by Asian buying patterns and geopolitical risk. Rigzone reported on Oct. 26 that Indian refiners are increasingly turning to Persian Gulf crude and pulling back from their mainstay supplier, Russia. OilPrice.com reported Tuesday that India’s purchases of Russian crude are linked to pricing, discounts and import costs. India remains the world’s third-largest crude oil importer, according to OilPrice.com. Indian Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the United States has not pressured India to cut crude imports from Russia. “I never felt anything,” Puri said, as carried by Reuters and reported by OilPrice.com. Puri said Indian refiners are buying higher volumes of Middle Eastern crude because availability has increased and pricing is more favorable compared with Russian grades. “Whatever people say or do, ultimately it is anchored in their...

Energy Market Briefing Monday, October 26, 2026 1. Headlines Oil prices are lower this afternoon, with WTI crude down 1.9% to $101.31 and Brent crude down 1.34% to $110.20, according to price data. The Bakken crude differential stands at -$3.42 against WTI. The national average as of today is approximately $4.29, driven largely by the ongoing conflict with Iran which began in February. Geopolitical developments are active. According to reports from Rigzone and OilPrice.com, Saudi Arabia's defence minister led a delegation to Tehran on Monday for de-escalation talks, coinciding with a separate meeting involving top security officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey with...

U.S. Sanctions Waiver Opens Door for Russian Diesel, Shifts Global Crude Flows

Russian refiners have increased diesel output to fulfill a new supply agreement with the United States, according to a report from OilPrice.com. The deal, announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on October 9, involves immediate shipments of over 300,000 tons of diesel, with more to follow. To facilitate the trade, Washington has issued a temporary six-month Treasury waiver lifting sanctions on Russian fuel. The first tanker, the Malta-flagged Agioi Fanendes, left the Russian port of Primorsk on October 23 carrying approximately 40,000 tons of ultra-low sulfur diesel and is scheduled to arrive in New York on November 7. The average U.S. diesel price was $6.32 a gallon on the day of the ship's departure, up sharply from $3.63 a year earlier. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said shipments to the United States would continue regularly. For Bakken operators, the influx of Russian diesel could help ease high domestic distillate prices that...
