North Dakota Rig Count Climbs to 38 with New Devon, Hess Activity
The state's active drilling rigs increased by one net, continuing a steady upward trend seen over the last month.
North Dakota's active drilling rig count rose to 38 on Monday, November 2, 2026, according to Bakken Wire live data. The count represents a net increase of one rig from the previous day, with two new rigs added, one removed, and two rigs moving to new locations.
The new drilling activity was concentrated in the core of the Bakken formation. Devon Energy Williston, L.L.C. spudded a new well using the NABORS B 13 rig in McKenzie County (152-101-23). Hess Bakken Investments II, LLC also added a new rig, the ENSIGN 532, also in McKenzie County (149-100-29). Hess also removed one of its rigs, the NABORS X-10, from a site in Mountrail County (157-93-17).
Two operators repositioned rigs within the Williston Basin. Koda Resources Operating, LLC moved its STONEHAM 16 rig to a new location in Divide County (160-103-17). Oasis Petroleum North America LLC moved its NABORS B26 rig within Mountrail County to location 158-92-33.
The current rig count of 38 continues a trend of gradual growth. One week ago, on October 26, 2026, the state reported 37 active rigs. One month ago, on October 3, 2026, the count stood at 35 active rigs, meaning the fleet has grown by three rigs over the past four weeks.
The Bakken formation is North Dakota's primary oil-producing region, and rig activity is a leading indicator of future production. Operators like Devon Energy and Hess are key players in the basin, and their deployment of new rigs signals ongoing investment in development drilling. McKenzie County remains the most active county for drilling in the state.
