North Dakota Rig Count Holds at 26, Oasis Adds Rig in Mountrail
The state's drilling activity remains steady week-over-week but is down one rig from late May as national rig count rises.
North Dakota's active drilling rig count held at 26 on Friday, June 26, 2026, according to live data from Bakken Wire. The count increased by one rig since Thursday but saw no net change for the week, matching the total from June 19. Activity is down one rig from the 27 active rigs reported on May 27.
The day's single addition was an Oasis Petroleum North America LLC rig. The NABORS B26 rig was listed as active at location 157-93-13 in Mountrail County. No rigs were removed or moved locations on Friday.
The steady state-level activity contrasts with a rising national trend. According to a report from OilPrice.com, the total number of active drilling rigs for oil and gas in the United States rose this week. Data from Baker Hughes published Friday showed the U.S. count reached 573, an increase of 26 rigs compared to the same time last year.
The national increase was driven by gains in oil and gas rigs. OilPrice.com reported the number of active oil rigs rose by 7 to 440, while gas rigs increased by 3 to 125. The miscellaneous rig count held steady at 8.
Regionally, the Permian Basin saw its rig count rise by 2 to 258, though this remains 12 rigs below year-ago levels. The Eagle Ford count was unchanged at 44, which is 3 more than last year.
The report also cited U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) data showing a slight weekly increase in domestic crude production. For the week ending June 19, U.S. crude oil production averaged 13.819 million barrels per day (bpd), up from 13.806 million bpd the previous week. Production was up 384,000 bpd compared to a year ago.
Completion activity, as measured by Primary Vision’s Frac Spread Count, was unchanged at 192 crews for the week ending June 19.
The broader drilling activity uptick comes amid volatile oil markets. OilPrice.com noted that oil prices were down sharply on Friday, with Brent crude trading at $71.90 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) at $69.43.
The Bakken formation in North Dakota remains one of the nation's top oil-producing regions. The state's rig count is a key indicator of near-term drilling investment and production potential for operators and royalty owners across the Williston Basin.
