Oasis Permits Two New McKenzie County Wells; Firebird Abandons Disposal Well

Daily DMR filings show two new horizontal well permits for Oasis Petroleum, while activity is also noted in Dunn, Williams, and Burke counties.

The North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources approved two new horizontal well permits for Oasis Petroleum North America LLC in McKenzie County, according to yesterday's daily activity report. The operator filed for the STEPANEK 5201 13-18 3B and STEPANEK 5201 13-18 4B wells, both located in NW NE 18-152N-101W in the Elk field.

Other new drilling permits included one for Murfin Drilling Company, Inc. in Dunn County and one for Phoenix Operating LLC in Williams County. Murfin permitted the LC RAMBOUSEK 1-9H well in SE SE 9-141N-97W in the St. Anthony field. Phoenix Operating LLC permitted the BIG STONE 32-29-20 5H-LL well on LOT 1, 5-159N-98W in the Skabo field.

The report also listed significant well status changes. Firebird Services, LLC officially abandoned the BIG STONE 1 SWD disposal well, located on LOT 1, 5-159N-98W in Williams County. The filing updates the well's status in the Big Stone Disposal field to "NOW ABANDONED."

Two other administrative updates were recorded. Steel Reef Burke LLC filed a well name change for the TXL STORAGE 1 well in SENW 7-162N-91W, Burke County. Additionally, XTO Energy Inc filed to change the name of a Dunn County well from DAVID FEDERAL 21X-20C to DAVID FEDERAL 21X-20H. The well is located in NE NW 20-148N-96W.

The day's permitting activity was led by Oasis Petroleum with two new wells, indicating continued development in the core McKenzie County area of the Bakken. The other new permits show ongoing, though scattered, activity across Dunn and Williams counties. The abandonment of the Firebird disposal well in Williams County represents a reduction in saltwater disposal capacity in that area, a logistical factor for operators. The name changes for the Steel Reef and XTO wells are routine administrative filings.
