Phoenix Operating, Kraken Lead Daily Bakken Activity
DMR approves four new McKenzie County permits for Phoenix, while Kraken reports strong well completions and several confidential statuses are released.
The North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources approved four new drilling permits on Monday, August 3, 2026, according to its daily activity report. All four permits were issued to Phoenix Operating LLC for a single pad in McKenzie County.
The permits, numbered 43180 through 43183, are for the SETTER FED 22-27-34 1HF through 4HF wells, all located in the NW NE of Section 22-145N-98W within the Charlie Bob field. This represents a new four-well development project in the core of the Bakken formation.
In other permitting activity, eleven existing permits were renewed. Burlington Resources Oil & Gas Company LP renewed six permits for the Kirklandfill and Morganfill wells (1A, 1B, 1C for each) in Section 21-150N-96W of McKenzie County's Pershing field. All six remain listed as 'Confidential'.
The report also listed five new producing well completions, all operated by Kraken Operating, LLC. Two wells in McKenzie County posted particularly strong initial production. The MCCABE 24-13 #5H flowed 1,886 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) with 2,593 barrels of water per day (BWPD), while the MCCABE 24-13 #6H flowed 1,766 BOPD with 2,254 BWPD. Three additional Kraken wells in Williams County—the EMERSON 33-28-21 #11H, #4H, and #3H—were also reported as completed.
The DMR report included several updates to well statuses. Eight wells were added to the confidential status list. These include saltwater disposal (SWD) wells for Firebird Services, LLC and Phoenix Operating, LLC in Williams County, and Oasis Petroleum North America LLC wells in Mountrail and Williams counties.
Conversely, five wells were released from confidential status, making their information public. Whiting Oil and Gas Corporation had a well in McKenzie County's Foreman Butte field released. Hess Bakken Investments II, LLC had a Williams County well in the Truax field released. Formentera Operations, LLC saw three wells in Divide County's Frazier field—the BULL MOUNTAIN-31-18-DIV S611HF, S513HF, and S515HF—released from confidential status.
The day's activity underscores continued operational focus in the Bakken's core counties, with McKenzie, Williams, and Mountrail seeing new permits, completions, and status updates.
