U.S. Eyes Russian Gas Deal, OPEC+ Holds Steady as Markets Eye Winter

Diplomatic push to restore Russian gas flows to Europe and steady OPEC+ policy could influence global energy prices affecting Bakken crude.

The United States is engaged in talks to restore Russian natural gas flows to Europe via Ukraine, a move that could lower global gas prices and indirectly affect oil market dynamics crucial to North Dakota producers, according to a report from Oilprice.com. The proposal, floated by President Trump's envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff during September trips to Moscow and Kyiv, involves selling Russian gas through a U.S. intermediary.

A renewed deal would provide Ukraine with "badly needed revenue" from transit fees and lower gas prices for European consumers as winter heating demand peaks, Oilprice.com reported. European gas storage is below usual levels, with Germany's storage only 61% full against an 80% target as of November 1. However, the plan faces significant legal hurdles under existing European Union restrictions on Russian gas imports.

For Bakken operators, a potential influx of Russian pipeline gas into Europe could ease competition for U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes, potentially freeing more domestic gas for the U.S. market and affecting associated gas economics in the Williston Basin. The EU has officially vowed to phase out all Russian energy imports, but European countries remain the largest buyers of Russian LNG, accounting for roughly 85% of Yamal LNG's global deliveries in the first nine months of 2026.

In related market news, major OPEC+ nations reaffirmed plans to keep oil production quotas unchanged in December, Rigzone reported. The group's decision to maintain output targets comes as conflict in the Middle East continues to curb a portion of its production.

The combination of steady OPEC+ supply and potential movements in the European gas market creates a complex price environment for Bakken crude. Lower European gas prices could reduce the incentive for fuel switching from oil to gas, supporting oil demand, while steady OPEC+ policy provides a floor under global oil prices. North Dakota's oil production, which is sensitive to global crude prices, remains directly influenced by these broader geopolitical supply decisions.

Any deal to restore Russian gas flows would also create "a lucrative opportunity for American investors," according to the Wall Street Journal report cited by Oilprice.com. For royalty owners and service companies in the Bakken, stability in both oil and gas markets is critical for maintaining drilling budgets and well completion activity heading into 2027.

U.S. Nuclear Materials Push Draws Global Energy Attention

The U.S. government and national laboratories are pushing to close a widening nuclear technology gap with China, a competition OilPrice.com reported as central to global energy leadership. According to OilPrice.com, the United States remains the world’s largest nuclear power producer, but China has vastly outspent the U.S. on nuclear research and development for years. The source said China’s sector is younger, more advanced and growing quickly, while the American fleet stagnates and reactors age out. China is also pushing small modular reactors and molten salt reactors, giving Beijing influence over the sector’s future direction, OilPrice.com reported. Damien Ma, energy lead analyst for Gavekal Technologies, wrote in a 2026 report quoted by OilPrice.com and the South China Morning Post in June: “By a wide margin, China will have the world’s most dynamic and significant nuclear industry through 2035.” Ma also said construction efficiencies mean China can build a new plant in...
