Bakken Rig Count Holds at 23 as Oil Prices Retreat
North Dakota production outlook stable despite sharp intraday price decline, with high prices still supporting activity.
North Dakota's active drilling rig count held steady at 23 on Tuesday, suggesting a stable near-term outlook for Bakken oil production even as crude prices fell sharply. The state's key metric for future output remains at a level consistent with maintaining current production volumes.
West Texas Intermediate crude was trading at $102.13 per barrel, down $4.29 or 4.03% for the day. The international benchmark Brent crude traded at $110.53, down $3.91. Despite the day's sell-off, prices remain well above levels that typically support increased drilling activity in the Bakken formation. The Bakken crude differential was $3.42 below WTI.
Historically, the rig count is a leading indicator for oil production, with changes in the number of active drilling rigs typically preceding changes in output by several months. The current count of 23 rigs is sufficient to sustain production at recent levels, barring significant changes in well productivity or completion activity. A sustained increase in the rig count would be necessary to return the Bakken to growth mode.
Natural gas prices, often a secondary driver for Bakken operators due to the region's high oil-cut, were at $2.78 per MMBtu.
The midday price volatility highlights the sensitivity of operator planning to market signals. While the day's drop is significant, the absolute price level for both WTI and Brent remains robust. The stability in the rig count suggests operators are looking through short-term price swings and maintaining their current operational tempo.
For royalty owners and state revenues, the current environment of high absolute prices but a stable rig count points to continued strong cash flow from existing wells, with less immediate prospect for a surge in new drilling permits. North Dakota's oil production has been in a holding pattern around 1.1 to 1.2 million barrels per day in recent years, a level the current activity appears designed to maintain.
Market observers will watch whether the rig count responds if the current price weakness persists. For now, the data suggests a steady-as-she-goes approach from Bakken operators.
