Bakken Rig Count Holds at 27 as Oil Prices Surge Past $91
North Dakota's active drilling fleet remains near historic lows despite favorable crude prices, signaling continued production discipline.
North Dakota's oil rig count remained unchanged at 27 for the week, according to live Bakken Wire data, as benchmark oil prices pushed higher. The stability in drilling activity comes despite West Texas Intermediate crude trading at $91.42 per barrel, a gain of 0.97% on the day.
The current rig count of 27 is near historic lows for the Bakken formation, a level that suggests operators are maintaining strict capital discipline. Historically, the number of active drilling rigs is a leading indicator of future oil production, with a typical lag of several months between a change in rig activity and a corresponding change in output.
Brent crude, the international benchmark, also rose to $94.15. The price for Bakken crude at the wellhead is typically discounted against these benchmarks. The live data shows the Bakken differential at -$3.42 versus WTI, putting local crude at approximately $88.00 per barrel.
Natural gas prices were reported at $3.13 per MMBtu. The sustained low rig count, even with oil prices in a favorable range, points to a focus on generating free cash flow and returning capital to shareholders rather than aggressive production growth. This strategy has been a hallmark of the post-pandemic shale industry.
Analysts note that with fewer rigs running, the basin's production growth potential is structurally limited in the near term. Operators are likely concentrating on completing drilled but uncompleted wells (DUCs) and optimizing production from existing high-performing assets.
The long-term outlook for North Dakota production remains tied to commodity prices and operator spending plans. While current prices provide a strong economic incentive, the rig count suggests that any production increase will be modest and managed. The focus for Bakken operators appears to be on margin protection and operational efficiency at current activity levels.
