Bakken Rigs Hold at 34 as Oil Prices Rally Above $85
A steady rig count and strong crude pricing suggest North Dakota production may stabilize near current levels.
North Dakota's active rig count held at 34 on Wednesday, a key indicator of near-term drilling activity in the Bakken formation. The figure comes alongside a significant rally in oil prices, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude trading at $85.38 per barrel, up $1.32 or 1.57% on the day.
The current rig level remains near the lower end of its historical range for the basin. Historically, the rig count is a leading indicator for future oil production, with changes typically impacting output volumes several months later. A sustained rig count suggests operators are maintaining a consistent, albeit cautious, level of development activity.
Supporting the operational environment is a strong price for Bakken crude. The local price benchmark, calculated as WTI plus the differential, stood at approximately $81.96 per barrel given the current Bakken differential of -$3.42 versus WTI. The global Brent crude benchmark was even stronger at $92.34, also up $1.32 on the day.
The sustained price above $80 per barrel provides a favorable revenue environment for Bakken operators. This price level is generally considered supportive for drilling economics in the play, particularly for operators with prime acreage. Natural gas prices, a secondary revenue stream, were recorded at $2.83 per MMBtu.
Analysts often view a stable rig count in a higher price environment as a signal that production declines may be mitigated. Without a significant increase in drilling, however, production growth is unlikely. The current data points to a period of consolidation, where operators focus on efficiency and completing drilled but uncompleted wells (DUCs) to maintain output.
The outlook for North Dakota production will depend on whether operators choose to deploy more capital to increase the rig count. The current combination of a steady 34 rigs and robust oil prices suggests that, barring a major price correction, Bakken production is positioned for stability in the coming quarters.
