
Global Energy Shifts Impact Markets, Water Crisis Threatens Operations
Singapore considers nuclear power amid Asian supply crisis, while U.S. Southwest faces severe water cuts that could affect industrial activity.
Singapore is moving toward a potential decision on nuclear power as Asian energy markets reel from supply disruptions, according to an OilPrice.com report. The International Atomic Energy Agency will begin an assessment in 2027 to determine if Singapore can make an informed decision on deploying next-generation nuclear energy. This comes amid extreme turmoil in Asian energy markets due to the war in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has disrupted about a fifth of daily global oil shipments. Asia buys about 85 percent of the crude that flows through the Strait. Singapore's Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment stated the assessment is a "key milestone" but that the city-state has not decided to adopt nuclear energy. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said on May 19 that Singapore's energy strategy must be "more deliberate, more diversified and more forward-looking than before."
In the United States, a growing water crisis in the Southwest could have implications for industrial operations, including energy production. OilPrice.com reported that a new 10-year plan contemplates cutting water supplies for Arizona, Nevada, and California by up to 40 percent. The Trump Administration said it will impose the plan since the states have failed to reach an agreement. The Colorado River, a major water source for the region, continues to shrink after a drought spanning more than two decades. Las Vegas previously faced a crisis where Lake Mead's level threatened a city intake, prompting an emergency project to build a deeper one. Corpus Christi, Texas, also faces the prospect that its water reservoirs could come close to running out sometime next year, despite heavy rain in April briefly improving one reservoir's capacity.
Separately, Britain's transition to electric vehicles faces an infrastructure gap, OilPrice.com reported. The UK now has more than 2 million electric vehicles on the road, increasing the demand for supporting infrastructure. Motorway service areas, considered critical national infrastructure, are central to supporting this transition and the movement of goods. Roadchef, an operator, has secured 75-year lease extensions on five sites, including the historic Watford Gap, allowing commitments of tens of millions of pounds to upgrade facilities and expand capacity.
For Bakken operators and royalty owners, these global developments underscore the interconnected nature of energy and resource markets. The Asian supply crisis reinforces the importance of stable, diversified energy exports, while the escalating water shortages in key U.S. regions highlight a critical input constraint that could affect operations beyond the Southwest. The infrastructure challenges in the UK's EV transition reflect the broader global shift in energy demand that oil-producing regions must monitor.
