Global wind energy additions are expected to total 160 gigawatts (GW) in 2026, a 6% decrease from the record 170 GW added in 2025, according to an analysis by Wood Mackenzie reported by OilPrice.com. The research consultancy cited the completion of a five-year development cycle in China as part of the reason for the decline. In the United States, 46 GW of new wind capacity is expected between 2025 and 2029, though policies from the Trump administration could hinder development.
Engineering advances continue to drive turbine efficiency. Modern units now exceed 15 megawatts (MW) each, with rotor diameters reaching up to 220 meters on models like the GE Haliade-X, allowing fewer turbines to generate more power, OilPrice.com reported. Blade design has been enhanced with sensors and actuators for real-time adjustment, capturing more energy at lower wind speeds.
Meanwhile, the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to disrupt global fuel supplies, with airlines scrambling for jet fuel. The strait's closure in February 2026 cut off a key route for 20% of the world's oil, hitting Asian markets hardest. Europe faces a significant deficit, with consultancy Energy Aspects forecasting a jet fuel supply shortfall of almost 600,000 barrels per day in Q3 2026, OilPrice.com reported. European inventories at the start of June were at roughly 30 days of demand.
The fuel crisis has exposed vulnerabilities for import-dependent regions. Southeast Asia was hit particularly hard, leading to energy emergencies, rationing, and work-week adjustments in some nations, according to OilPrice.com. While the crisis has catalyzed a push for localized renewable energy, the region's "beleaguered and fragile grids" are reportedly deterring billions in clean power investments. Issues include inadequate grid capacity, permitting delays, and unclear power purchase agreements, threatening the rollout of new projects.
For Bakken operators and North Dakota royalty owners, these global dynamics underscore the continued strategic importance of stable, domestic hydrocarbon production. While renewable technology advances, infrastructure limitations abroad and persistent geopolitical supply disruptions highlight the value of secure energy sources like the Bakken's crude oil, which can be refined into critical fuels like jet fuel. The strain on global refining systems and logistics networks from the Hormuz closure reinforces the reliability of integrated North American supply chains.
