
Global Offshore Wind Supply Crunch May Prolong Reliance on Bakken Oil
Soaring turbine costs and manufacturing bottlenecks in Europe could delay the energy transition, supporting longer-term demand for Bakken crude.
Supply chain pressures creating a structural bottleneck in the European offshore wind market may have downstream implications for the long-term demand outlook for Bakken crude oil, according to a new analysis. A report from Rystad Energy, cited by OilPrice.com, outlines a market becoming "increasingly constrained in its most critical components," which could slow Europe's planned energy transition.
The core issue is a highly concentrated turbine supply. With GE Vernova having paused new offshore wind orders, Siemens Gamesa and Vestas now account for virtually all turbines available to European developers. This limited supplier diversity, combined with soaring costs and technical complexity, is hampering project development. Turbine selling prices have risen by 40% to 45% since 2020, far outpacing manufacturing cost increases of 20% to 25%.
The supply constraint is most acute for complex components like the nacelle—which houses the generator and power electronics—and in blade manufacturing. "The market has moved into structurally tight territory: high demand, limited supplier diversity and rising turbine complexity," said Sander Baksjoberget, a Senior Offshore Wind Analyst at Rystad Energy. This gives manufacturers significant pricing power and the ability to be selective about which projects get built.
For Bakken operators and North Dakota royalty owners, a delayed or more expensive European energy transition could signal a more prolonged period of demand for reliable fossil fuels. Europe's ambitious offshore wind goals are a key pillar of its plan to reduce hydrocarbon imports. If the continent "doesn't meaningfully expand Western manufacturing capacity," the Rystad analysis warns it won't deliver its post-2030 targets at the required pace or cost.
The analysis notes that current global uncertainty, partly due to conflict in the Middle East, exacerbates these supply challenges. Furthermore, the industry is shifting to larger, more complex turbines in the 14 to 15 MW class, which involve longer production cycles and greater logistical demands. This technological evolution, led by Siemens Gamesa and Vestas, adds another layer of complexity and potential delay to mass deployment.
While directly focused on offshore wind, the report highlights broader energy transition hurdles. Persistent high costs and supply chain failures in alternative energy sectors can reinforce the strategic value of stable, domestic oil production from basins like the Bakken. Any significant slowdown in Europe's renewable build-out may help maintain a firmer floor under global crude prices than transition forecasts currently anticipate, directly impacting the economics of North Dakota's primary industry.
