Oil Prices Jump Over $104 Amid Geopolitical Tensions, SPR Releases
WTI crude surges 2.44% as Bakken operators see differential narrow to -$3.42.
Oil prices climbed sharply in early trading Friday, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rising $2.49 to $104.49 per barrel. Brent crude gained $3.04 to reach $113.84, according to live price data. The Bakken crude differential narrowed to -$3.42 versus WTI.
The market is caught between heightened geopolitical risks in the Middle East and coordinated emergency releases from global strategic petroleum reserves, OilPrice.com reported. Bullish factors include threats to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, attacks around Saudi energy infrastructure, and low distillate inventories. Bearish pressure comes from barrels entering the market from reserves and renewed diplomatic contacts.
The United States completed a major portion of its contribution to an International Energy Agency release agreement this week. The U.S. Energy Department awarded nearly 16.8 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve on October 28, after awarding 23.8 million barrels earlier, according to OilPrice.com. The SPR is near its lowest level since 1982.
Europe is also adding supply to the market. France's economy minister Roland Lescure said Europe will release 42 million barrels of oil reserves over the next three months as part of its commitment to ease prices, Rigzone reported.
The price strength is translating to robust earnings for major industry players. Sinopec, China's largest oil refiner, posted higher third-quarter profits, Rigzone noted, driven by the elevated price environment.
For Bakken operators, the price surge combined with a narrower differential is a positive signal. A WTI price above $104 with a differential of just -$3.42 means Bakken crude is effectively trading above $101 per barrel. This price level supports drilling economics and cash flow in the Williston Basin.
Natural gas prices saw a slight decline, trading at $2.89, down $0.06 from the previous settlement. The disconnect between rising oil and steady natural gas prices highlights the oil-focused nature of the Bakken's production mix.
Traders are weighing whether the influx of reserve barrels will be enough to offset ongoing supply risks. For now, neither the bullish geopolitical risks nor the bearish reserve releases have produced a decisive move, leaving the market volatile, OilPrice.com reported.
