Oil Prices Steady Near $90 as Analysts Point to 'Remarkable Destination'
Bakken crude differential holds at -$3.42 as WTI gains slightly, with J.P. Morgan analysts noting a significant market shift.
Oil prices held steady near multi-year highs in early Saturday trading, providing continued robust revenue for Bakken shale operators. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude traded at $90.83 per barrel, a slight gain of 31 cents, according to live price data. The international benchmark Brent crude was virtually unchanged at $98.32.
The price strength supports strong wellhead economics in North Dakota. The Bakken crude differential—the discount at which local crude trades against WTI—was recorded at -$3.42 per barrel. This stable, narrow discount means Bakken producers are capturing nearly all of the gains from the high benchmark price.
The sustained high price environment represents a significant shift for the market. According to a report from Rigzone, analysts at J.P. Morgan said the oil market has arrived at a "remarkable destination." This analysis, published Friday, suggests a fundamental reassessment of the market's balance and price trajectory.
Natural gas prices also saw upward movement, adding 5 cents to trade at $3.00 per million British thermal units. While not a primary driver for the primarily oil-focused Bakken formation, higher gas prices improve the economics of associated gas production and can support gas capture investments.
For Bakken operators, prices consistently above $90 per barrel for WTI solidify cash flows for drilling programs, well maintenance, and shareholder returns. The current price level is well above the breakeven costs for most shale producers in the Williston Basin, encouraging sustained production.
The market's arrival at what analysts term a "remarkable destination" follows a period of tight physical supplies, constrained OPEC+ output, and ongoing geopolitical tensions. These factors have combined to create a firm price floor, with volatility primarily to the upside.
The steady pricing provides predictability for North Dakota's state budget, which relies heavily on oil tax revenues, and for mineral rights owners receiving royalty payments. The narrow Bakken differential further ensures that the local industry fully benefits from the global price strength.
With prices holding firm, the focus for Bakken operators remains on operational efficiency, cost control, and managing the differential through pipeline and rail takeaway capacity. The current market structure offers a favorable environment for the basin's continued role as a top-tier U.S. oil-producing region.
