Bakken Rig Count Holds at 29 as Oil Prices Rally
Workforce and housing markets remain stable at current activity levels, with oil prices providing support.
The active rig count in North Dakota's Bakken formation held steady at 29 this week, a level that suggests continued stability for the region's workforce and communities. The count has remained near 30 rigs for several months, reflecting a measured pace of drilling activity compared to previous boom cycles.
Oil prices provided a supportive backdrop, with WTI crude rallying 1.62% to $83.46 per barrel and Brent crude rising 1.69% to $89.20. The Bakken crude differential narrowed to -$3.42 versus WTI, improving the netback for local producers. Higher sustained oil prices typically support employment levels and capital spending by operators, which in turn flows through to local economies.
At 29 rigs, the Bakken workforce is operating at a fraction of the peak seen during the last boom, which topped out at over 200 active rigs. The current level supports a core of skilled oilfield workers and service company employees, but without the severe labor shortages and rapid population influx that historically strained housing and infrastructure. Housing markets in key western North Dakota communities like Williston, Dickinson, and Watford City have stabilized, with less volatility in rental and real estate prices.
The direct link between rig count, employment, and community health is well-established in the Bakken. Each active rig supports an estimated 120-140 direct and indirect jobs across drilling, completion, production, transportation, and support services. The current activity supports thousands of jobs, providing a steady economic base for local businesses, schools, and public services without the extreme boom-bust pressures.
Natural gas prices, a key revenue stream for many operators, were quoted at $2.75 per MMBtu. While not a primary driver of Bakken drilling, gas revenues contribute to overall well economics and operator cash flow.
